Isn’t the wing tip designed to dissipate the effects of disturbed boundary air near the tip of the wing so that there’s less drag?

I mean... in theory wouldn’t that increase the wing’s capacity to generate lift, although it is not its primary focus?

Idunno... I know little about aviation... But I do know that male focused media is designed to attract bros and not actual smart people, so you get a like!

Wingtip devices are intended to improve the efficiency of fixed-wing aircraft . [1] There are several types of wing tip devices, and although they function in different manners, their intended effect is always to reduce the aircraft’s drag by partial recovery of the tip vortex energy. Wingtip devices can also improve aircraft handling characteristics and enhance safety for following aircraft. Such devices increase the effective aspect ratio of a wing without materially increasing the wingspan . An extension of span would lower lift-induced drag , but would increase parasitic drag and would require boosting the strength and weight of the wing. At some point, there is no net benefit from further increased span. There may also be operational considerations that limit the allowable wingspan ( e.g. , available width at airport gates ).

But you can sell 6 more aircraft a year if you put them on a plane. Like having a spoiler on a car.

Our directive for the aircraft company I work at is to have them on everything.

What ttymm said. They basically redirect some of the vortex backward instead of outward.

There is a ratio to how much wing they’re “worth” but they don’t generate lift directly. They just make a wing less wasteful.
